Genius Hour Reflection
Genius Hour Reflection

My genius hour started out as a thought. A thought that one day might become a dream, then hopefully a reality. One of the group members of my genius hour was house fostering kittens at the time of the introduction of this project. So we all got together and introduced the idea of raising money for the “Almost Home” animal shelter up in Quinnesec, Michigan. It took us an awfully long time to come up with ways to raise the money.
Before the money idea was even made, we thought we could do some good free labor. We drove up the animal shelter and offered our help to volunteer with the animals. My whole group filled out paperwork and talked with the front desk lady. Unfortunately we never got contacted so this plan was a fail.
Our first idea came inspired from another. We were going to create and sell bath bombs. We spent about 5 nights making, buying and trying to sell the supplies. We had many different scents, colors and sizes. These bath bombs did not turn out as we hoped they would. We hoped our next idea would be better.
After reflecting for some time with genius hour blog posts, TED Talk, and other English activities, we created a bake sale. We had two bakes sales within the time our genius hour project was brewing. They both lasted two days each, they both were completely successful. They money was getting higher towards our goal.
My genius hour was a proud accomplishment I made. Although, I would've chosen a different path if it werent for my partners who thought the animal shelter idea was best. I think I would have created something more effective on something else. Animal shelters need to be helped but when we visited, the population of animal was very scarce. I would've chosen a route to help teenagers like myself. I would have created a website or page that helped young adults get out what they need to get out. People fall on hard time and sometimes nobody is there to help them.
I would have done this project instead for two simple reasons. The first reason is because it would have helped people cope with what their feeling, and that lessens the suicide rates. The second is because it would have been more inexpensive for me. Animals were a great choice, but so would have been a help chat. I would have also been much more self motivated than I was in my first genius hour scenario.
Although I was thinking of alternative projects, my genius hour group accomplished a lot in the time we had. We raised more than over $200 for the “Almost Home” animal shelter. We had two bake sales as well as bath bomb sales. We volunteered our personal time to help the animals. My website also progressed throughout the time we had.
My website is my best reflection of my project. It includes pictures of our products and why we have this foundation made. My blog posts were also a big accomplishment. I worked very hard to make them detailed and well written. The TED Talk was also a great addition to the website. Im very proud of the work i've produced here.
